It has become more common for business owners to create their own website, thanks to all the website designing platforms available today. There is no need to understand the difficult coding techniques, to build a website. Website designing platforms are designed for everyone, making it simple to drag and drop the design and features you want, no prior experience in web designing is needed!!
The strat-up process is often expensive, and hiring a website designer might not be feasible for everyone. But DIY website designing has its own pros and cons. On the plus side it saves money, while on the other side, there are many misconceptions about it. Because of the website myths many business owners are missing out on significant revenue opportunities.
In this blog post we will talk about common website myths and how to avoid it on your own website.
MYTH 1. People will automatically find your website once you hit “Publish”.
FALSE: Pressing “publish” will not do magic and land your site on first page of Google or people on landing page of your website. You will have to actively promote your website across various platforms to attract traffic.
To Rank high on Google search results often takes months or years. ( sometimes ). It is important to keep optimizing the website so that Google can read it properly and recognise it as a valuable information. This is why it’s very important use other methods to drive traffic to your website.
MYTH 2. The Home page is the only page that matters.
FALSE: Yes, the home page is super important, but it is not the only sole star of the show. Picture this – You search something on google, what really pops up? Yes, it’s often some blog post or some other page, that’s not the home page, right? Often the home page is not most viewed page on the websites.
The only time someone actually enters your website through the home page is whenever they specifically go straight to your domain. Or are coming through some other platforms, where the home page is linked. Otherwise traffic always comes through different doors.
Because of this you need to optimize all of your pages for good user experience and functionality. In my opinion most important page is service page, where people determines whether to make actual decision to purchase or invest. So, my advise would be, take time and strategize every page of your website.
MYTH 3. Getting a Website Designed is very Expensive.
FALSE: You must have heard that getting a website designed is too expensive. Well, not exactly, I would say, it is an investment.
Professionally designed website always has major return on investment. Hiring a professional to design or develop a website is not always feasible. Even if you do not have the budget for a professional, there are so many template to get started with professional looking website. It only costs $30. So, even if you are tight on budget, you do not have to be concerned about building a website or its costs. It is always about finding what works for your budget.
MYTH 4. Publishing a Website will make you show up on Google.
FALSE: Ever wondered why your Business id not popping up on Google maps, even though you have published your website?
Well, this is not how it works! To show up on Google maps you need to have Google My Business Account.
Once you’ve created and verified Google My Business Account, anyone can find your business on Google Maps. Publishing website will not automatically show your business on the Google Maps.
MYTH 5. Stock photos are just as good /better than having your own pictures.
FALSE: No matter how pretty and professional stock pictures look, but nothing beats your own photos. If you do not have the budget to hire a professional photographer you can always DIY your own photoshoot for your website.
You do not need a professional camera to do the photoshoot, Camera quality of your cell phones are great these days. Having your own photos up on website increases credibility and trust and makes them believe in what you are selling them. It allows people to see your face and makes people more likely to buy from you.
MYTH 6. I need all cool widgets and features to make my website look good.
FALSE: Sometimes less is more! When it comes to website design. There are so many amazing features available these days. But, you do not need them to add them all to your website.
Why? because , adding too many cool features will make your website run slower. The more time it takes to load, the more you lose your revenue.
Being minimal is the key to website design and structure. You do not want your visitor to get confused. You want them to know exactly where to go and what to do without feeling overwhelmed. Sometimes the best thing you can do is to keep it nice and simple.
MYTH 7. The About page is all about you.
FALSE: It’s not about you, it’s about them! You might think your about page is your time to shine, to tell them the whole story. But people do not visit your about page to read about you. The truth is they are only reading to know how you can help them.
So, instead of listing off your achievements, focus on what you can do for them. Show them skills and value you can bring to their work. Talk about their struggles, their dreams, and how you can help them overcome it. When they see themselves in your story, that’s when magic happens.
So, remember, it’s not about you, it’s about them.
